This is a young woman who was admitted with infectious supraglotitis secondary to Hemophilus Influenzae, type B, who subsequently developed acute pancreatitis that could not be explained. Physical examination demonstrated a malar rash and retrospective history revealed one year of morning joint pain/stiffness; she was subsequently diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus, which was the cause of the acute pancreatitis.
